Why do you need Aeration?
Koi like use need oxygen to survive, normally oxygen in water is provided by plants however Koi are bottom feeders, that means that they feed from the bottom of the pond - scratching around, digging where they can in so created natural ponds, and they are known for eating vegetation of all sorts, this includes plants, so Koi and plants do not really mix. This is why we need to use artificial aeration. Aeration is also often used inside a biological filter to improve bacteria grow/productivity.
At the Nishikigoi Centre, we offer a large selections of different types and makes of air pumps, however we believe the Air Tech range from Evolution Aqua the best quality and affordability that is why we recommend these brilliant products.

Where you I put my air pump.
Your air pump should as close to fresh air as possible and where there is no risk of the pump pulling in smoke, fumes or bad smells (because of airborn bacteria), because this air will be delivered directly to your pond with all bacteria, pollution, CO2, and other particles that can be harmful to your pond and your fish. Another important point about where to place your air pump is that you should never install an air pump below the water level! (Unless you install a non-return valve in the line!) Otherwise if the power to the pump is interrupted, water will back siphon down the delivery tube and flood the pump workings, rendering the pump inoperative and with water and electricity coming in contact it can be dangerous.
What size pump will I need
However it is important not to go over the top if you only need a 20 lpm pump it is best to buy a 20 lpm pump not a 40lpm this is because the added pressure on the system could adversely effect the pump and everything connected to it. If you intend of expanding the system in a later date and do want an oversized pump the you can install a spare air control tap and leave it open to avoid a back-pressure build-up. If you are unsure at about your system or would like to install an over sized pumps you can buy a brilliant pressure gauge that simply fits in line which lets you ensure that you are running your air pump at the correct levels for more details on Pressure gauges click here (coming soon).
